Synopsis
Efruz - a young Kurdish woman is fighting to become the first openly transgender lawyer in a rapidly changing Turkey.
Seeking hope, solidarity and healing within her community.
What seat will she sit in her first trial in this fragmented country; the Victim, the Defendant, or the Lawyer?
The Project
Directed by Bircan Birol - a documentary filmmaker based between Scotland and Turkey.
Bircan's documentary 'My Name is Anik’ about her grandmother’s immigration was commissioned by Creative Scotland and premiered at Edinburgh International Film Festival.
This project is in funded development with Screen Scotland.
Bircan travelled to Istanbul and Ankara in 2021, 2022 to film and recently travelled back in 2023 in the run up to the Turkish elections and Pride marches.
